Seeking professional help takes courage and a willingness to deal with life's challenges. In the first session the therapist and the client will begin to develop a relationship and define the goals for therapy. In the early sessions of therapy, the speed of therapy and the depth of self-disclosure is in the control of the client based on the clientscomfort level. Every effort is made to make the client feel welcome, comfortable and heard. The therapist may ask the client to complete questionnaires and answer assessment questions.
The therapist will explain the confidential nature of the therapy relationship and will discuss any limitations to confidentiality with you before you share your story. She will also review office policies and expectations and answer any questions you have regarding therapy.
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT's) are psychotherapists whosetraining focuses on interpersonal relationships. They are licensed by the State of California to assess, diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders in individuals, families, couples, children and groups.
Marriage and Family Therapists are licensed by the Board of Behavioral Science. Requirements for licensure include the completion of a related doctoral or masters degree, passage of a comprehensive examination and completion of at least 3000 hours of supervised counseling experience. They are bound by a professional code of ethics, abide by the laws and regulations affecting the profession. MFT's are required to engage in activities to keepup-todate in their field through continued education. Many MFT's, including myself, belong to professional organizations such as the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT).
Sessions are usually 50 minutes but some can be longer depending on the treatment method. Most clients are seen once a week in the beginning, then, as time goes on, less frequently. The number of sessions depends on what your current needs are.
For clients who desire to come bi-weekly, we try to encourage the use of homework assignments, reading of books, or using other resources.
The length of time a client is in counseling depends the nature of the problem and the goals of the client. Some clients have a very specific problem that can be worked through in a set course of counseling. For others, counseling is an on-going learning process and they choose to receive counseling for a longer period.
Unfortunately, sometimes one partner is not as willing as the other to come in for counseling. However, we often find that it is possible to improve the relationship with just one person involved in counseling.
Marriage and Family Therapists are not legally allowed to prescribe medications. However, based on a joint assessment of problems you are facing, it may be advisable to consult with a psychiatrist or physician to determine whether medication is warranted. Typically, clients see someone under their health insurance coverage or a referral can be made.
